Describe the relationship between the Levite and his concubine at the beginning of the story.

Why does the girl’s father keep stalling them from beginning the long journey back from Bethlehem to Ephraim?

Imagine you are going on this dangerous journey in the ancient world. What thoughts are going through your head as you leave the safety of home?

to continue in this town?

What does it say about their character that they offer their daughter and concubine rather than themselves to this rogue mob?

Why does the man set his concubine outside the door all by herself that night?

What is his attitude towards her the next morning after that inexpressibly horrible night?

What is his purpose in dismembering her and grotesque, morbid gesture of sending her body parts out to the other tribes?

Describe the attitude of the narrator as we come to the end of this text.

What do you expect the responses of the other Israelites will be to this horrible event?

Why does God allow such awful things to happen in his world, among his own people?

When have been some times that you have been person ally confronted by the dangers and violence of the city?

What are some things that we as followers of Jesus can do to help stop violence in our communities?

What are some steps that you need to take to improve the relationships you have with those closest to you?

How could you approve in your ability to present apologetic arguments for your beliefs?

Why does Jephthah make that silly promise to God when God’s Spirit is already upon him?

Why does God give the Israelites victory in this battle?

Imagine you are Jephthah as he sees his daughter come out of the gates. What emotions are surging in your heart as you realize your error?

Why does Jephthah follow through on this awful vow that turned out in a way he clearly did not intend? Why does his daughter go along with this ridiculous promise?

Why does she request a long vacation before the sacrifice is carried out?

How does this horrible incident affect later Israelite culture?

God does not desire child sacrifice, why does he allow Jephthah to do this horrible act?

When are some times when what you have said has gotten you into trouble?
How seriously should we take our word? Why is our word not taken more seriously today?

How can you become more careful in the things that you promise?

What are some (moral) promises that you need to follow through on this week?

Why does Sisera trust the help that Jael offer’s him?

What is Jael’s motivation for killing Sisera in such a brutal way?

Why are we given such gory details about the violence in this story?

Why does she leave the body exactly as it was when she killed him?

How would you feel if you were Barak and found that Sisera had been defeated this way?

When is a time in your life that you found it difficult to trust in God?

Who is someone you find easier to trust than God in your life?

Why is it so much easier to trust our friends than it is to trust God?

How do we know that God is ultimately worthy of our trust?

What is the appropriate way for a disciple to respond in such a challenging situation?

What would be the overall atmosphere on the boat after the sky’s clear at Jesus’ command?

Why does Jesus reprimand them about their lack of faith in such an obviously challenging situation?

How can we go about building the kind of faith that Jesus expects out of his disciples in this story?

Victory Before Fans & Detractors

Matthew 12: 22 - 37

Describe an experience at a sporting event where you inadvertently cheered for the wrong team.

Imagine you are the people bringing this seriously incapacitated man to Jesus.

What is it about this specific healing event that made people wonder whether Jesus was the anointed?

How have you seen Jesus move and work in power over the past twelve months?

What is it that Jesus did in your life or the lives of those around you that made you consider following him?

Why in the world do the religious leaders suspect witchcraft as the source of Jesus’ power?

What does this argument teach us about the realities of the spiritual realms?

Why does Jesus mention their people who are practicing exorcism?

What is the relationship between the Spirit of God and the kingdom of God?

In what way does victory over spiritual darkness herald the arrival of God’s reign?

Why does John mention that Jesus was back in the town of Cana?

What is ironic about one of Herod’s officials going to Jesus for help?
How would you describe the attitude of this official who is asking for help for his son?
Why does Jesus respond so curtly to this man when he is first asked for help?
Why does Jesus heal this officials son immediately from a distance rather than going and visiting him?
How would you have felt if you were the official as Jesus sent you away?

What does the fact that the father further interrogates his employees about the timing of his child’s healing show us about the level of the guy’s faith?
Why do this official and his family not believe until they receive the evidence of a sign?\
What makes “signs” a unique category of miracles?
When are some seasons in your life that you demanded a sign from God before you would trust him?
What are some signs that God has given you that have helped to encourage your faith?

What are some different kinds of darkness present that Jesus says are in control of that moment of time?

How is Jesus able, in such a healthy way, to cope with the horrible fate that awaits him?

Appreciated alternative medicine

Luke 17: 11 – 19

What is the most meaningful thank-you note you have sent or received?

Why do the authors of the gospels often go to great lengths to describe where Jesus is located geographically?

How would you imagine the relationships between the lepers being, inside of their little colony?

Why do these guys cry out so intensely to Jesus for assistance as he passes by?

Why does Jesus send them towards priests as a condition of their healing?

Describe what the Samaritan does to express his thankfulness to Jesus for being cleansed.

Why is Jesus so surprised about this guy’s returning to say thanks?

Why might only the Samaritan return to thank Jesus for the healing?

What does this demonstrate about the spiritual openness of Jesus’ own generation in Israel?

Why is it that those who are marginalized tend to be more open spiritually?

What is something for which you have forgotten to praise God in your life?

How are you going to express thanksgiving to Jesus for this work in your life this week?
